Three Panorama City men were arrested Wednesday and 31 roosters were seized during a police raid at a cockfight in the East Valley community, Los Angeles police said.

Jose Perez, 35; Vicente Chavez, 32, and Martimiano Farias, 32, were arrested at Perez’s home in the 9100 block of Tobias Avenue on suspicion of possession of fighting birds, Sgt. Jeff Sheldon said.

Sheldon said the roosters were “fit for fighting,” with shaved combs and cut spurs.

Police and officials from the East Valley Animal Shelter seized the fighting birds from large wire-mesh cages in a two-hour “feather-flying ordeal,” Sheldon said.

The three men were ordered to appear on the misdemeanor charge April 29 in Van Nuys Municipal Court, at which time the roosters’ fate will also be determined, Sheldon said.

The 7:30 p.m. raid culminated a monthlong investigation, he said.
