Los Alamitos : Two Workers Injured When Roofing Falls

Two construction workers were injured Friday when part of the roof of a single-story commercial building in Los Alamitos gave way, sending them crashing to the concrete floor about 15 feet below.
County Fire Capt. Patrick McIntosh said the men were placing plywood sheathing on the roof of a building under construction at 3592 Katella Ave. Both stepped on the same section of roof at the same time and fell through the plywood, McIntosh said.
The accident occurred at 1:08 p.m., McIntosh said. Initially 24 firefighters, three engine companies, a truck and two paramedics responded to reports of a “roof collapse.” All but one fire engine and a paramedic unit were recalled after the accident was discovered to be less serious than first thought, McIntosh said.
Roofer Duane L. Hoots, 23, of Riverside was taken to Anaheim General Hospital where he was reported in fair condition with an injured right knee. Another roofer, Damon Corson, 21, of Buena Park was taken to Los Alamitos Medical Center with possible fractures to his ankles and feet, McIntosh said.
The California Department of Occupational Safety and Health was investigating the accident.
