Houston Astro shortstop Dickie Thon underwent an eye examination that showed that the vision problems caused by a beaning in April of 1984 are no worse now than last year, according to a statement released by the club.
Thon reportedly had problems seeing the ball clearly this spring. He left training camp to return to his home in San Juan, Puerto Rico, last Saturday. He reportedly is considering quitting baseball because of the eye problems.
Thon was examined at the eye specialist’s office in Houston Friday and then was said to be headed back to the team’s training camp in Kissimmee, Fla., where club officials waited to talk with him about his future.
Thon was fined $500 for leaving camp without permission and will be fined $1,000 a day if he fails to return to Kissimmee.
