Gulch Rallies to Win the Bay Shore Stakes
Top-weighted Gulch pulled away in in the stretch for a one-length victory over early pacesetter High Brite in the $163,000 Bay Shore Stakes for 3-year-olds Saturday at Aqueduct in New York.
High Brite, at 119 pounds with Chris Antley riding, led most of the way and finished second, a neck ahead of Shawklit Won, 114, and Ruben Hernandez.
Gulch, carrying 123 pounds, responded to the whip of Jose Santos entering the stretch. He drew even with High Brite in midstretch and edged away nearing the wire.
Gulch covered seven furlongs on a fast track in 1:23 1-5 for his sixth victory in nine career starts.
He earned $124,800, including a $27,000 Breeders’ Cup award, and returned $3.20, $2.60 and $2.80. High Brite paid $7.20 and $6.80, and Shawklit Won paid $4 to show.
