Bakker Scandal and TV Ministries

Share

Your article (March 21), “Bakker Scandal Could Be a Jolt to TV Ministries,” didn’t hold a lot of surprises for me.

But, as Oral Roberts seals himself off in his prayer tower and Jim and Tammy Bakker lick their wounds in Palm Springs, I wonder how surprised those people are who blindly send their hard-earned dollars to these, and other, TV evangelists, month after month.

Do they honestly think they’re serving some divine purpose by helping the Bakkers buy prescription drugs or construct an amusement park? Do they honestly think that, whether or not Oral Roberts dies by the end of the month, God is sending them some kind of signal?

Yes, I suppose they do.

And it’s the dangerous agnostics like me--who aren’t addicted to drugs, aren’t committing adultery, aren’t misleading the public and aren’t invoking the name of some supreme being every time we want to frighten others--who will continue to spread so-called evil in the world.
