Orange County College Baseball : Titans Take Santa Barbara Deep to Even Series With a 7-6 Victory

Alex Trevino and Keith Kaub hit home runs in a four-run sixth inning to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 7-6, come-from-behind victory over UC Santa Barbara Saturday in Goleta.

The Titans evened the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. series at a game each.

Mike Harkey, who allowed 5 hits, 9 walks and 2 home runs, managed to pitch a complete game with 10 strikeouts to improve his record to 4-2.

After Fullerton (1-1, 20-11) took a 2-0 lead on Greg Mannion’s second first-inning home run of the series, the Gauchos (1-1, 15-11-2) got a solo homer from Russ Ballati in the third and a three-run home run from Erik Johnson in a four-run fifth.

Fullerton rallied in the sixth on Trevino’s solo shot and Kaub’s two-run homer to tie the score. Mark Baca doubled home Ken Garcia for the go-ahead run.

The series concludes today at 1 p.m., with Larry Casian pitching for the Titans against Steve Connolly.

In other PCAA games:

Fresno State 4, UC Irvine 1--The Anteaters led, 1-0, going into the eighth inning when Eddie Zosky hit his first home run of the season. The Bulldogs (1-1, 19-13) scored three more runs in the inning to defeat UCI (1-1, 13-14-1). Bulldog starter Dennis Springer threw a six-hitter to improve to 4-2.

In the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.:

Cal State Dominguez Hills 11, Chapman 8--Dominguez Hills pounded three Chapman pitchers for 16 hits including 5 home runs in the victory at Hart Park in Orange.

The Toros’ Chris Haslock, who started as the designated hitter, hit two homers and recorded the save, coming on to pitch two innings and strike out two.

Fred Hanker hit a three-run home run and Joe Pardo and Chris Plank hit solo homers for Dominguez Hills (6-2, 20-8).

Four players homered for Chapman (0-3, 11-16), including Darren Nelson--who hit his ninth in the ninth inning--along with Bucky Bollinger, Tony Gardea and Brent Rhylick.

Dominguez Hills starter Bruce Vegley (3-1) went six innings for the victory. Panther starter Jim Bennett fell to 2-6.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference:

Southern California College 8-10, Point Loma 1-1--Kevin Kasper hit a two-run home run in the first game and a solo homer in the second to lead the Vanguards (6-5, 10-19) at Point Loma. SCC’s Jeff Motske was 2 for 3 with two runs scored in the first game, and Joe Holden was 3 for 4 with two runs scored in the second. Robert Mansfield (2-6) threw a four-hitter for the victory in the opener, and Mike Lomeli (6-4) threw a five-hitter for the victory in the nightcap.

In the NAIA District 3:

Christ College of Irvine 5-5, West Coast College 11-3--Steve Hantula’s one-out, two-run double in the eighth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and gave Christ College (7-17) a victory and a split with West Coast College of Fresno (5-13) at Irvine.
