Rogue Truckers

Share

It was a whole day before I was calm enough to write a coherent letter after reading about a trucker’s attack on a passenger car in San Juan Capistrano. And now I see that the driver has racked up seven speeding convictions in the last two years!

What has to happen before we find a way to control renegade truckers? It was a miracle this accident had no fatalities, but some in the past have and you can bet there’ll be more in the future.

Obviously, the California Highway Patrol, even with its special truck-catcher units, can’t be everywhere at once. But we can. Nothing but the combined efforts of every “civilian” on the freeway who’s ever been menaced by a moron in a 50-foot-long lethal weapon can stop that kind of harassment. We have to report them and report them and report them!

Maybe truckers should be required to display a large sign with simple identifying numbers and an 800 phone number for reporting such behavior as driving up the back of some poor soul who’s just trying to observe the speed limit. At least then centralized records could be kept of dangerous drivers, their companies notified--and the drivers and their employers fined.

Surely the CHP could provide a central reporting number--the additional fines generated should be more than adequate to finance it. If they’ll do that, maybe all of us can help them police the roads.
