Weak Storm Will Move In Just Before Time Moves On

Both the weather and the time will be a-changing this weekend. A weak storm is expected to move through the county late today and Saturday, leaving the area clear and clean for the beginning of daylight-saving time Sunday.

The storm will bring cloudy skies, gusty winds, and a 20% to 30% chance of showers between late this afternoon and midday Saturday, National Weather Service forecaster Wilbur Shigehara said. However, if and when the April showers do come, they should be light.

“A quarter of an inch is about all we’re going to get,” Shigehara said. “People in the foothills east of El Cajon might see a little bit more than that, but it is a weak storm, and it’ll be more cool and breezy than rainy.”

By Saturday afternoon, skies should begin to clear as the storm moves east, paving the way for a pleasant Sunday with clear skies.

Daylight-saving time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday, so clocks should be set ahead one hour before going to bed Saturday night. This is the first year that daylight-saving time has begun the first weekend of April instead of the last one, under a new federal law.

“Half the weekend may not be the best, but hopefully we’ll make up for it on Sunday,” Shigehara said.

Temperatures will continue their downhill spiral today but not as dramatically as Thursday’s plummet of four to eight degrees in different areas of the county. Thursday’s high at Lindbergh Field was 65, eight degrees cooler than Wednesday. Today’s high is expected to reach 63.

High temperatures in both coastal and inland areas will be from 62 to 68 today. Coastal highs will range from 63 to 67 Saturday, and inland highs will be from 65 to 73. All areas will be five to six degrees warmer Sunday as the sunshine increases. Coastal lows will be in the low 50s today through Sunday, with inland lows in the 40s all three days.

Surf will be three to six feet at 16-second intervals, which is longer than usual because they are coming from quite a distance out, Shigehara said. Ocean temperature will remain at 58.

Mountain areas will have highs in the 45-to-53 range today and between 40 and 48 Saturday before nudging up Sunday. Lows will be in the high 20s. Deserts will have highs from 76 to 84 today and Sunday and from 70 to 78 Saturday. Lows will be in the 40s.
