Seal Beach Pupils Praise Their Pal, Planet Earth

Children at McGaugh Elementary School in Seal Beach had kind words and songs on Friday for their friend, planet Earth.

The school, at Seal Beach Boulevard and Bolsa Avenue, structured all its classes for the day around the theme of Earth Day. Principal John Blaydes said the idea came “because we’ve been teaching based on themes, and I remembered how nice it was in the ‘60s and ‘70s when we had celebration of Earth Day.”

At an outdoor assembly Friday morning, 700 of the students worked flash cards, and the composite showed Earth surrounded by a rainbow of colors.

Another special event was the inaugural of a song specially written for the day by Matt Reid, a former member of the rock group Berlin. Reid’s mother, Lois Cohn, is a teacher at the school. He composed the song “Save Our Earth” to be sung for the first time ever at the event.

Other events included the reading of poems and essays by students and the planting of a tree. “Earth Day is a celebration of Earth as our home, teaching students to recognize the delicate beauty of our planet, our dependence on the Earth’s diminishing resources and the interdependence of all living things,” Blaydes said.
