Steve Carlton, a starting left-hander throughout his 22 years in the major leagues, signed with the Cleveland Indians and will become a middle-inning relief pitcher in his latest attempt to revive his career.
Carlton, 42, a four-time Cy Young Award winner, failed in a bid to rejoin the Philadelphia Phillies. He spent 15 of his 22 years with Philadelphia, where Cleveland Manager Pat Corrales managed him in 1982 and 1983.
Carlton made three comeback attempts last year--with Philadelphia, the San Francisco Giants and the Chicago White Sox.
