THE AL CAMPANIS INCIDENT : NAACP Will Seek Investigation of Job Practices in Baseball

The Los Angeles chapter of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People said Wednesday that it will ask Dodger owner Peter O’Malley and Commissioner Peter Ueberroth to investigate the employment practices of major league baseball.

In a press conference at its Los Angeles headquarters, the NAACP also said it will ask major league baseball to establish “clear and aggressive affirmative action guidelines” to ensure equal employment opportunities for all employees, including management.

“We feel that a fair-share agreement with the Los Angeles Dodgers and with the entire baseball league is appropriate in order to ensure that there is going to be access by blacks and other minorities in the baseball arena,” said Raymond Johnson, president of the NAACP’s Los Angeles chapter.

“If this is not done, then blacks can look forward to the present state of affairs, which is very, very sorry in terms of allowing blacks and other minorities access to the higher echelons.”
