Anaheim : Ordinance Would Ban Alcohol at City Parks

Share

It’s all right to hold a can or bottle of beer at an Anaheim park. Just don’t get caught drinking the contents.

That is the implication of an ordinance that the City Council is being asked to change.

“The park patron may have alcohol in the parks but can’t legally consume it. Once the ranger has departed, there is nothing to stop patrons from consuming the beverage,” wrote Chris Jarvi, the city’s parks and recreation director, in a report reviewed by the council Tuesday.

If approved next week, the amended ordinance would make it unlawful to “possess any can, bottle or other receptacle containing any alcoholic beverage in any public park.”

The revised ordinance would eliminate “the temptation to drink” and help park rangers do their job, Jarvi wrote in the April 7 report to the council.

The number of rangers and daily patrols was increased in city parks this year after residents complained that some of their neighborhood parks had turned into havens for drug dealers and other undesirables.

In December, the council expanded the city’s park ranger program as part of an Anaheim plan to reduce crime in parks.
