Truck Overturns, Cattle Trapped

Share

A truck hauling 22 head of cattle overturned on the southbound Long Beach Freeway in Commerce this morning, blocking three lanes until mid-afternoon. The animals--trapped inside the truck’s trailer--were injured and “extremely hostile,” the California Highway Patrol reported.

None of the cattle escaped to roam the freeway, but their ire forced Los Angeles County animal control officers to call for reinforcements before freeing the livestock. CHP Officer Lujuanna Lopez said the traffic problem was further complicated because 70 gallons of diesel fuel spilled on the freeway. There was no immediate indication what caused the 10:15 a.m. accident, which occurred just south of the Santa Ana Freeway interchange.
