The European PGA fined Spanish golfer Severiano Ballesteros $80 for using his older brother Vicente, also a pro golfer, as a caddy in the $250,000 Cannes Open now under way at Cannes, France.

The rule governing caddies was changed by the Tournament Players Committee. As of Jan. 1, no professional golfer is allowed to caddy for another pro during a European PGA tour event. Vicente Ballesteros is a club pro at the Lamanga club in Spain. Previously, the caddy rule applied only to professionals with tour cards.

“That’s the stupidest rule I have ever seen,” Severiano Ballesteros said. “I’ll pay the fine and keep right on using him. Don’t worry, I’ll write it off as a tax deduction. I guess if the tour needs money so badly, I’ll donate some.”
