Trainer Larry Thompson of Lexington, Ky., who trains and is part-owner of Vimy’s Pleasure, a 5-year-old maiden gelding, filed a $62,500 damage lawsuit against jockey Joe Deegan, who allegedly disregarded his instructions in the race April 4 and “eased” the horse.
Thompson charges that Deegan ignored his orders by “refusing to give said horse a free reign (sic) and encouraging him with the rider’s stick,” the suit said.
Keeneland officials said that they had never heard of such an action before. Thompson said he drafted the suit himself. He is asking for $12,500 in losses and $50,000 for breach of contract and pain and suffering.
