A 25-year-old man was fatally injured Sunday when his car careened off the road, ran across some railroad tracks and crashed into a drainage ditch, authorities said.

Roberto Belmares of Fullerton died about 2:30 p.m. Sunday after his car plunged into the 8-foot-deep concrete ditch near Acacia Avenue and Valencia Drive, Sgt. Gary Miller said.

Belmares was pronounced dead at the scene, Miller said.

Police have turned up no witnesses to the afternoon accident, Miller said, but “it appears he was northbound on Valencia at a high rate of speed.”

Miller said Belmares then apparently lost control, careened off the roadway at the northwest corner of the intersection, across two sets of railroad tracks and into the ditch. Miller said there was no evidence of alcoholic beverages in Belmares’ vehicle

A passing motorist discovered Belmares in the car and notified police, Miller said.

Investigators asked that any witnesses to the accident call the Police Department at 738-6810.
