Newport Beach : Man Arrested Following a Standoff With Police
A 32-year-old man surrendered to police early Thursday after he fired several shots from his apartment, including one or two at officers, Newport Beach police said.
No one was injured during the incident. After more than 2 1/2 hours, a police hostage negotiating team persuaded the man by telephone to surrender, Officer Kent Stoddard said. Police did not fire any shots during the incident, he said.
Andrew Peter Lopin, who was alone in his apartment in the 1100 block of West Balboa Boulevard, surrendered at 12:45 a.m., police said. He was booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer.
Police had been called to Lopin’s apartment twice in one night about two weeks ago because of noise complaints and had arrested him on suspicion of disturbing the peace, Stoddard said.
Lopin apparently began shooting a gun Wednesday night because he was upset that he was about to be evicted, “largely because of his earlier disturbing-of-the-peace situations,” Stoddard said.
Neighbors first notified police a few minutes after 10 p.m. that shots were being fired. When police tried to contact the suspect, “he fired at least one round at them,” Stoddard said.
Newport Beach’s special weapons and tactics team and the hostage negotiating team were called, and Costa Mesa officers were brought in to control traffic, he said.
Police estimate that Lopin fired five or six shots. They later found a .38-caliber, five-shot revolver in the apartment, Stoddard said.
Lopin was being held on $250,000 bail.
