All-pro linebacker Chip Banks, smarting over the draft day trade that sent him from the Cleveland Browns to the San Diego Chargers, hinted that he might not report to the Chargers. Asked if he was going to honor the trade, Banks told the San Diego Union: “I don’t know. I’m busy talking with my agent. I don’t have anything right now to tell the media. If I come, I’ll have a comment.”
Two years ago, the Browns dealt Banks to Buffalo as part of the deal for quarterback Bernie Kosar, but Banks refused to report to the Bills and Cleveland was forced to give Buffalo a first-round pick.
The Chargers apparently showed some last-minute concern over the deal, demanding a compensation clause from the Browns in the event Banks refused to report to San Diego.
