COUNTY ART MUSEUM RETROSPECTIVE

A retrospective film tribute to Joseph Cotten screens Friday to May 30 at the County Museum of Art. The veteran screen actor is scheduled to introduce his favorite film, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Shadow of a Doubt,” at the inaugural 8 p.m. screening.

SHADOW OF A DOUBT(Friday, 1 and 8 p.m.) Cotten stars with Teresa Wright in this chilling mystery about a young woman who suspects her uncle of being a notorious murderer. Also featured in this 1943 Hitchcock classic are Hume Cronyn and Macdonald Carey. With the story of LYDIA (1941), in which Merle Oberon plays an elderly lady who relives her romantic past when reunited with four of her lost loves. CITIZEN KANE(1941) (Saturday, 8 p.m.) Cotten plays the conscience Kane (Orson Welles) pushes aside in his rise to power. With JOURNEY INTO FEAR (1942), co-written by Cotten and Welles, about the complicated plight of an American armaments expert sought by Axis agents in World War I.

LOVE LETTERS,(1945) (May 15, 1 and 8 p.m.) Cotten cures an amnesiac, Jennifer Jones, with the healing power of his love. With THE FARMER’S DAUGHTER (1947), about a headstrong Swedish girl, played by Loretta Young, who fights for a congressional seat and wins hearts.

THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS(1942) (May 16, 8 p.m.) Orson Welles directed this drama about a son born of a wealthy Midwestern family who keeps his mother apart from the man she loves. With GASLIGHT (1944), the classic chiller about a man trying to drive his wife insane, featuring Cotten with Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer.
