Two people were killed and two others were taken to a hospital in critical condition after their car collided nearly head-on with a car that ran a red light in Westminster Monday, police said.

The victims were husband, wife, grandmother and great-grandmother in the same family, officers said. They withheld names of the victims until other members of the family could be notified.

Police arrested the driver of the other car and booked him into Orange County Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. They identified the driver as Jose Luis Avila, 22, of Westminster.

The accident occurred at Hoover Street where it ends at Bolsa Avenue. Investigators said Avila’s car, traveling south on Hoover “at a high rate of speed,” could not stop in time for the red light, went into the intersection and he tried to turn left.

The collision overturned the other car heading west on Bolsa and fatally injured the husband and one of the elderly women and sent the wife and the other elderly women to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital in critical condition.
