A caretaker was arraigned Monday on charges of stealing art treasures from a London residence leased by banker and National Gallery board chairman Jacob Rothschild from Viscount Althorp, the brother of Britain’s Princess Diana. Michael Whelton, 34, the caretaker at Spencer House in St. James Place, appeared at Marylebone Court and was charged with conspiring with others unknown to steal 16 paintings between February 1 and May 1. Whelton was also charged with stealing three paintings belonging to J. Rothschild Holdings at Spencer House on May 1. The house has been leased to Rothschild by the 22-year-old viscount, who works for NBC’s “Today” morning show in London.
