Once again, Tom Cruise and his high-flying cohorts rule the charts this week. “Top Gun” continues its stranglehold on the No. 1 spots on both the sales and rental charts in Billboard’s current edition. “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”--favored to replace “Top Gun” at the top of the lists--moved up to No. 2 on the rentals, while Brian De Palma’s bloody remake of “Scarface” flowed up to No. 5 on the sales charts. “Legal Eagles” finally hit the Top Five in rentals, flying to No. 5 this week. Highest-charting new entries this week were: in sales, head Talking Head David Byrne’s “True Stories” (at No. 34) and, in rentals, the Tom Hanks-Jackie Gleason comedy “Nothing in Common” (at No. 18). Other sales leaders: the irrepressible Jane Fonda (“Low-Impact Aerobics Workout”) in the health and fitness category, and the inescapable “Say No to Drugs” on the business and education chart.
