The name Challenger, in honor of the seven astronauts who died in the space shuttle tragedy last year, was selected Tuesday for the new Mira Mesa junior high school scheduled to open in September.

The San Diego Board of Education voted unanimously for the name, which is an exception to the general district policy of naming schools after either prominent civic individuals or a school’s geographic location.

The junior high at Parkdale Place and Winterwood Lane will open in temporary facilities in September for an estimated 900 seventh-graders. A permanent school is scheduled for completion by 1990, with 1,600 seventh- and eighth-graders.
