An Escondido man arrested late Wednesday on suspicion of raping a 14-year-old girl attempted to hang himself about midnight in his detention cell at Escondido Police Department headquarters, Escondido police said.
Steven Bradly Clingman, 21, apparently tried to hang himself with his T-shirt but was spotted by an officer conducting cell checks, said Lynn Field, the department’s community services officer.
Clingman was taken to Palomar Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, police said. He was then taken to the County Jail in Vista, where he was booked for investigation in the raping of a San Marcos teen-ager.
The girl told detectives she was raped in an Escondido apartment. Based on information she gave authorities, Clingman was arrested.
