Sunset Beach : Civic Group Urges End of Daytime Surfing Ban

Surfers in Sunset Beach may be able to catch the waves in their own town if county officials approve a civic group’s recommendation to lift a surfing ban.

The Sunset Beach Community Assn. voted unanimously Thursday night to recommend that the 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. summer surfing ban be lifted on the stretch of beach between 8th and 10th streets, association president Charlie Dodson said.

Surfers collected more than 130 signatures on a petition they presented to the civic group.

Dodson said he was impressed by the fact that the surfers took their petition to the 10 homeowners on the beach who would be affected by the change. Six of the owners signed the petition.

The surfers were equally impressed by the support they received from the association.

“It was great. They backed us up all the way,” said Ben Bigler, 19, a surfer who organized the petition drive. “I’d really like to see this come through.”

Gary Carlisle, a spokesman for county Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder, who represents the area, said he could not comment on the proposal. Wieder was unavailable for comment.

Surfing has been restricted in Sunset Beach during the summer months to keep the area safe for swimmers.
