Top Seed Matthiessen Upset in Senior Tennis
Top-seeded Dorothy Matthiessen, the 1985 50-and-over national singles tennis champion, was upset by unseeded Patricia Kujawski of San Diego, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, Friday to advance to the semifinals of the National Hardcourt Senior Tennis Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
Kathy Henry (Hinsdale, Ill.), who defeated fourth-seeded Georgia Turner of El Cajon, 6-7, 6-3, 6-0, will play Kujawski in today’s 50 singles semifinal. In the other semifinal, No. 3 Louella Parsons (Carpinteria) will meet No. 2 Doris DeVries (Orangevale, Calif.).
In the women’s 60 singles, unseeded June Gay of Piedmont defeated top-seeded Betty Pratt of Longwood, Fla., 6-3, 7-6. Gay will play unseeded Elizabeth Eisenstein (Washington D.C.). In the other semifinal, No. 3 Doris Clark (Claremont) will play unseeded Doris Hakman (Honolulu).
All matches begin at 10:30 a.m.
