Aztecs Lose; Hawaii Wins WAC Title
Brigham Young shortstop Gary Schoonover hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday to eliminate San Diego State, 13-11, and lead the Cougars to the final of the Western Athletic Conference tournament at Provo, Utah.
The game had been suspended Friday night because of darkness with the score tied, 8-8, in the sixth.
The Aztecs (32-28-1) trailed, 11-8, going into the ninth. Kasey McKeon and Chuck McGinnis drew one-out walks and Nikco Riesgo followed with a two-run triple. Harry Henderson’s sacrifice fly scored Riesgo to tie the score, 11-11.
Hawaii (44-7) later defeated BYU, 6-5, for the WAC championship. Dan Nyssen’s two-run double keyed a four-run seventh inning, and Hawaii pitchers Mark Furtak and Joey Vierra shut down BYU (42-22).
