Bell : Drug, Party Laws Read

Share

Two ordinances giving police new tools to control rowdy parties and the sale of illegal drugs had public readings at the City Council meeting May 11.

The new drug law will permit the city to declare any residence used repeatedly for the purpose of selling illegal drugs to be a public nuisance. This means the owner of the building will be held responsible for illegal drug sales that take place on the premises, according to Police Administrative Capt. Bill East.

The other ordinance will charge people giving “loud or unruly” parties for the cost of repeated police visits. Those in charge of an assembly that requires police response will receive a free first warning. After that, they will be charged for services, which will probably include pro-rated police salaries, East said. They will also be held responsible for damage to city property and any injuries to police.
