The British passion for dogs takes on new meaning at Fred and Pauline Lormor’s pub, where Ben the Doberman is being allowed to stay on despite having eaten $4,150 worth of household goods and furniture.

In his nine months with the Lormors, Ben has wolfed down not only his regular meals of meat and dog biscuits, but a sheepskin rug, a television remote-control unit, earrings, three live chickens, assorted chunks of wall-to-wall carpeting, a settee and a door.

The Lormors, who live above their pub in this village in central England, say they tried putting a muzzle on the dog and it ate that too.

“He’s a wonderful dog,” Pauline Lormor said Tuesday. “We’d never get rid of him. He’s here to stay.”
