HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL : El Camino Earns Title With 9-1 Win

Jodi Iwafuchi pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight as El Camino Real clinched its fifth consecutive West Valley League championship Wednesday with a 9-1 win over Taft.

Iwafuchi (11-0) did not allow a hit after the first inning and retired the last 11 batters to lead El Camino Real (15-0, 10-0 in league) to its 70th straight victory. El Camino Real has won the last four City 4-A championships.

Iwafuchi, a sophomore, has an earned-run average of 0.43 and has 65 strikeouts in 77 innings. Iwafuchi has given up two hits or less four times and has allowed only 34 hits on the season.

Jenny Fleming was 2 for 2, including a home run, and had three runs batted in for El Camino Real. Iwafuchi also had two hits to raise her batting average to .480.

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY LEAGUE

Janeen Duncan threw a one-hitter as Alemany defeated Notre Dame, 1-0, and won its second straight league title. Duncan (16-5) had a no-hitter through four innings but surrendered a leadoff single to Kristin Gilsenan in the fifth. Duncan walked one and struck out six en route to her seventh shutout of the season. Alemany (17-7, 9-1 in league) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh when Jennifer Kroll singled home Ilene Tebbs, who had tripled. Tebbs and Tiffani Riley each had two hits for Alemany.

Becky Long was 2 for 4, including a solo home run, as Lousiville clinched a playoff berth with a 6-2 victory over Chaminade. Katie Madden, Tina Meglio and Colleen Morrissey also had two hits each for Louisville (10-8, 5-5 in league), which finished third. Kristen Heather (9-5) struck out five and pitched a complete game for the win.

NORTH VALLEY LEAGUE

Teri Klement, Maureen Monroy and Keri Rincon each had three hits to lead an 18-hit attack as Sylmar clinched the league championship with a 15-2 win over Kennedy. Deanna Monroy (9-3) allowed four hits and picked up the win for Sylmar (10-4, 9-1 in league).

Jennifer Goodwin pitched a complete game to lead Granada Hills (5-8, 4-6 in league) to a 4-0 win over Monroe.

WEST VALLEY LEAGUE

Cindy Lyke tripled and homered in the fifth inning to lead an eight-run explosion as Cleveland defeated Canoga Park, 15-10, for its first league win. Lydia Herrera and Tracy Buck each had three hits for Canoga Park.
