IN 39TH ANNUAL L.A. CEREMONIES : KCBS, KNBC GARNER 12 EMMY AWARDS
KCBS-TV Channel 2 and KNBC-TV Channel 4 each went home with a dozen Emmys apiece Saturday night as the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences bestowed the 39th annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards.
Among Channel 2’s collection was the prized Emmy for best regularly scheduled daily news program.
The station also was named best in the fields of information series (“2 on the Town”), news special (“AIDS: The Human Story”), public affairs special (“Breast Cancer: My Body, My Life”), news reporting (coverage of the Cerritos air disaster), performer (Howard Stevens of “Friday at Sunset”) and sports special (“Rams-Raiders: Gunning for the Top”).
In addition, Channel 2 picked up Emmys for feature reporting, feature segments, information segments, non-news writing and film-tape editing.
Channel 4’s “Fight Back! With David Horowitz” was named best public affairs series (network station) and Horowitz also got the Emmy in the host/moderator, series, category. “ ‘86: You Had to Be There” was named top entertainment special on a network station. Weatherman Fritz Coleman, who anchored that program last December, was honored as best host/moderator of a special, and the year-end show also was cited for achievement in graphics.
The Emmy for investigative reporting went to Channel 4’s “Beryllium: Deadly Wonder,” and other awards were given to the station for achievement in film-tape editing, children/youth special, mini-documentary, sports and camera crew on a breaking news story.
Jess Marlow, who recently returned to Channel 4 after a long stint as a Channel 2 news anchorman, shared the Emmy for news commentary with KABC-TV’s Bill Press.
Veteran news anchor Hal Fishman of KTLA Channel 5, who in a quarter of a century of news reporting has worked at all of the local independent stations, was chosen to receive the academy’s governors award “for his special and unique contribution to Los Angeles area television.” KTLA received four other Emmys.
In public television, KCET Channel 28 won six Emmys and KOCE Channel 50 received two. KHJ-TV Channel 9 also received six. KABC-TV Channel 7 got five awards. KTTV Channel 11 had four. KCOP Channel 13 and KVEA Channel 52 won two each, and one went to Group W for public access.
The award ceremonies, followed by dinner, took place before an often unattentive and generally talkative crowd of 1,025 at the Beverly Wilshire. Presenters included many familiar faces from local news programs. Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop hosted.
