“The Ultimate Collection.” Ben E. King. Atlantic. King hasn’t received the attention in recent years that many other great soul singers from the ‘60s have, partly because he wasted much of his time in the early days on nondescript renditions of familiar pop hits and partly because his post-’60s recordings have been spotty affairs. At his best, however, King is a singer with a remarkable sense of eloquence and drama. This generous, 56-minute CD-only retrospective includes highlights (such as “Stand By Me,” the landmark 1961 record that returned to the Top 10 last year) as well as low spots (“I Could Have Danced All Night”). ***
