Share

A driver parked on South Flower Street in Santa Ana opened his truck door into the path of a passing bicyclist Monday morning, knocking the cyclist into a traffic lane where he was struck by a passing car, police reported.

The cyclist died at a hospital two hours later of internal injuries, the county coroner’s office reported. Police identified him as Samuel Hernandez, 19, of Santa Ana.

Officers said the driver of the truck, Mark Burkhart, 39, of Irvine, is a gardener who had parked at 1900 S. Flower St. and was getting out of his truck to unload equipment about 6:30 a.m.

They said Hernandez, who approached the parked truck from behind, struck the open door and fell off his bicycle into the street.
