Four hundred yards of beach remain closed to swimming following a 4,500-gallon sewage spill that sent a stream of effluent onto Solana Beach waterfront late Monday afternoon.

County Health Service officials say that roots and grease blocked a sewage line at 143 Cedros Avenue, causing the effluent to erupt onto the street at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Belly Up Tavern.

The sewage then flowed about three blocks to the beach. By 8:30 p.m. city crews had cleared the blockage. Cheri Eir of the County Health Service said the beach will remain posted through today..
