Employees at Rep. Robert K. Dornan’s office in Garden Grove were doing their work in longhand after five typewriters were stolen from the 38th District congressman’s office sometime Thursday morning.

The IBM Selectric II typewriters, valued at $1,100 each, were taken from the office at 12387 Lewis St. between 12:45 and 8:30 a.m., according to Brian Bennett, the Republican congressman’s chief of staff in Washington.

Bennett said an artist delivering work to the office about 11 p.m. Wednesday found the front door unlocked. Art Kuhlmann, a field representative, was sent to the office. He observed nothing missing, locked the door and left about 12:45 a.m.

When field representative Cathy Sullivan arrived at the office at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, the typewriters were gone and the cord was damaged on a sixth IBM typewriter, Bennett said.

The lock on the back door had been jimmied, and molding around the lock was broken, Bennett said. The theft is being investigated by the Garden Grove police and the FBI.
