After telling officers that his business partner had committed a burglary, a Van Nuys man was arrested along with his partner when two bombs were found in his home, Los Angeles police said.

Steve Munson, 35, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of solicitation for murder, Cmdr. William D. Booth said. Munson’s associate, Mark McCray, 30, was suspected of manufacturing explosives and also had an outstanding felony warrant based on a probation violation, he said.

Police, who released no other details of the allegations, were drawn into the case when Munson flagged down a motorcycle officer on Tyrone Avenue just south of Victory Boulevard in Van Nuys on Wednesday morning. He said a man wanted for burglary was walking in a nearby alley, Booth reported.

Munson himself became a suspect when police saw a sawed-off shotgun under the driver’s seat of his car, Booth said. The officers found McCray in the alley as Munson had said and took him into custody, the police spokesman said.

The two were questioned at the Van Nuys police station, where police determined that there were bombs at Munson’s house on Covello Street, he said. After neighbors were evacuated, the police bomb squad and Criminal Conspiracy Unit found the bombs and defused them.
