Archbishop Mahony Will Attend Presentation Ball

Archbishop of Los Angeles Roger M. Mahony has accepted to receive the 21 presentees of the Social Service Auxiliary’s 29th annual Presentation Ball on June 1 at the Beverly Hilton. It’s to be in the Grand Ballroom. Mrs. C. Peter Nigg is ball chairman. Her committee includes Mrs. Michael A. Wayne, Mrs. Joseph L. Hegener, Mrs. Martin O. Riley, Mrs. Edward W. Hayes Jr., Mrs. Roger M. Sullivan, Mrs. William D. Jennett, Mrs. Edward W. Loftus, Mrs. J. Thomas McCarthy, Mrs. Patrick J. Frawley, Mrs. Paul J. Conn, Mrs. Stafford R. Grady and so many more.

PATRON LETTERS: Before the summer hiatus, if there is such a thing, the GALA Committee of the Pasadena Public Library Foundation is rushing 2,500 patron letters throughout Southern California inviting friends and fellow book lovers to support its Oct. 16 benefit dinner-dance and the Library Restoration Project. Specifically, Ernestine Avery, Katherine Paschall, Joan Hotchkis and Harriet Fullerton of the patron committee are sending embossed images of the library and enclosed bookmarks as a tip on the GALA theme: “A Building to Celebrate.” Responders will be awarded “First Edition” and “Rare Book” honors at the pre-benefit dinner.

For benefit festivities, Terry Stanfill and co-chairmen Ann Longyear and Roberta Grady have invited John Julius Norwich to be the evening’s honored guest. Lord Norwich is the noted historian, author and member of the National Trust and currently president of the World Monument Fund. The Myron Hunt-designed library, constructed in 1925 as the state’s first full-fledged public library, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

GALA proceeds will be used to restore the library in a five-phase, $2.4-million effort. Earlier this month the library’s renovated auditorium was dedicated to the late Donald R. Wright, chief justice of the California Supreme Court from 1970 to 1977, and a lifetime Pasadena resident.

MERGER SUPPORT: Downtown corporate moguls are merging with the American Heart Assn., setting a goal of $125,000 in the financial district’s third annual Union Bank Heart of the City 5-K Run on June 17. About 3,000 runners are expected to participate in the 3.1-mile race, including nearly 100 corporate teams.

Footing the bill by donating $2,000 for two corporate teams are honorary race committee members Lodwrick Cook of Atlantic Richfield Co., Unocal Corp.’s Fred Hartley and Union Bank’s John F. Harrigan.

Others involved are Joseph J. Pinola, Richard J. Riordan, Maurice DeWald, Jack Bock, Harry Oliver, Robin Parsky (chairman of the American Heart Assn.’s Greater Los Angeles Affiliate), Dick Ruffolo of the Wall Street Journal, Sgt. Richard Parmelee of the Los Angeles Police Department, Mark E. Buchman, H. W. Chenoweth and Bruce H. Corbin.

SAVE THE DATES: The U.S.-Holland Trade Dinner on June 4 sounds spectacular. The Netherlands Foreign Trade Agency is inviting 500 for a display of Dutch trade savvy and culture at a reception and dinner (and fashion show starring Sheila de Vries) at the Beverly Wilshire. Netherlands Ambassador to the U.S. Richard H. Fein will attend, and so will the Dutch minister for foreign trade Yvonne van Rooy, Consul Gen. Paul Lagendijk and Mayor Tom Bradley, for starters. . . .

The National Kidney Foundation celebrates the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney Studio’s “Snow White” with a hoped-for memorable affair July 12 at Walt Disney Studios.

KUDOS: Mireya Jones was introduced as the new Philharmonic Affiliates chairman this week at luncheon in the El Dorado Room of the Music Center. She, in turn, introduced the new coordinators and presidents of the numerous Affiliates groups. Mrs. Jones is a native of Guatemala, the wife of Dr. Lawrence W. Jones, mother of five, an alumna of UC Berkeley, an importer of Guatemalan fabrics, a public relations coordinator (Finlandia Vodka, CBS Cable, New York) and a director of volunteer services for the Pasadena Guidance Clinics. . . .

The King of Spain has knighted Samuel Mark, director of the Office of Hispanic Programs at USC. Spain’s Consul Gen. Pedro Temboury will present him the Order of Isabella the Catholic at 1 p.m. June 3 at the Beverly Wilshire. . . .

Helen Pekny of South Pasadena will head the Assistance League of Pasadena as president.

CROWDED CALENDAR: Margaret Given, Stephanie Johnson, Mimi O’Keefe and Clare Webb have booked Carolyn Thacker to create a Southwestern Summer Menu on June 2 at the Beach Club in Santa Monica. The cooking demonstration and lunch will be their effort as Childrens Chain members to raise funds for Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles.

They’re expecting Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg to show up for the Venice Family Clinic’s Art Walk next Sunday. The Art Walk ($35) permits the general public to tour the homes and studios of more than 40 of Southern California’s leading artists--including Peter Alexander, Laddie John Dill and Martha Alf. The walk begins at Westminster School, continues with a silent auction (more than 250 pieces), a food fair, docent-led historical tours of Venice (for $75), and the Art Walk dinner ($200) that evening at Filmland Center, Culver City, honoring “Comic Relief.” The presentation of the Dr. Morton K. Rubinstein Award will go to Dr. Jimmy Hara. Last year’s Walk netted more than $353,000 for the free primary health care facility in West Los Angeles serving 5,000 homeless.

ACHIEVEMENT: Cynthia Robinson Oredugba heads the fourth Black Women of Achievement Luncheon on June 3 at the Century Plaza. She and co-chair Camellia Hudson are expecting to recognize 20 women nominated by their employers and groups at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. affair. They’ll also introduce the 1987 key award recipients: actress Marla Gibbs and NBC Vice President Phyllis Tucker Vinson.
