San Diego homicide detectives are investigating the shooting of an armed robbery suspect by a police officer, Police Chief Bill Kolender said Sunday.

The victim, whose name was not immediately available, underwent surgery for gunshot wounds and was in stable condition Sunday night at Mercy Hospital.

The shooting occurred at 11 p.m. Saturday when police Sgt. Fred Moeller pulled up at the window of a fast-food restaurant in East San Diego and saw an armed robbery in progress, a statement by Kolender said. Moeller told investigators he saw a man wearing a ski mask and brandishing a handgun inside the restaurant.

As the man walked out the front door of the restaurant at 5223 El Cajon Blvd., Moeller attempted to arrest him, the statement said. The officer said he shot the masked man when the man turned toward him with the gun drawn.

Sgt. Jim Wallace said the department’s homicide detail investigates all shootings by officers, regardless of whether they result in fatalities.
