Local News in Brief : Short Circuit Causes Blaze at Simi Links
An electrical short in a machine used to make soft ice cream started a fire early Sunday morning in the snack shop of the Simi Hills Golf Course, causing an estimated $70,000 in damage to it and an adjoining pro shop, Ventura County Fire Department officials said.
The fire started shortly before 2:30 a.m. at 5031 Alamo St. and was contained by 3 a.m., although firefighters had trouble determining the source of the fire for several hours because of heavy smoke, said county fire spokeswoman Rhonda Barnes.
The snack shop kitchen was destroyed, and employees were serving food and beverages out of coolers Sunday afternoon, said assistant pro golfer Rick Gotham. The pro shop, which is in the same building as the concession stand, was damaged by smoke and heat.
The ice cream maker had been bought a week and a half ago, Gotham said.
