Laimbeer Fined $5,000 and Bird $2,000 for Fight

The National Basketball Assn. Monday fined Bill Laimbeer of the Detroit Pistons $5,000 and Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics $2,000 for their fight during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals Saturday.

Also fined was Bill Walton of the Celtics, assessed $500 for leaving the bench during the incident.

Announcement of the fines was made by Rod Thorn, the NBA’s vicepresident of operations.

The fight took place early in the final period at Pontiac, Mich., where Detroit won, 122-104. Laimbeer took down the Boston forward and the two exchanged punches. During the brawl, Bird threw the ball at Laimbeer. Laimbeer was fined for a flagrant foul after the 24-second clock expired, and Bird for fighting.
