Early-Morning Roof Fire Damages 4 Fashion Island Stores
A furrier and a jewelry store were among the shops damaged Tuesday in an early-morning fire that burned through a roof above 11 stores in Newport Beach’s Fashion Island shopping center.
City fire officials said flames caused about $150,000 in structural damage to four shops in the 11-store wing between Atrium Court and Robinson’s. Officials said part of just one shop, Phelps Fine Men’s Clothing, was damaged by the blaze, but M. Jacques Furrier, Macy Jewelry Importers and Fanfares shoes also received major water damage.

Fire Capt. Axel Zanelli said no estimate of damage to the stores’ contents was immediately available.
Deputy Fire Chief Don Jones said the fire started just before 4 a.m. “someplace in the attic or roof area,” but officials had not yet identified the cause. The blaze was controlled in 40 minutes and extinguished in a little more than an hour.
