A Sept. 30 trial date was set Wednesday in the multiple-murder case of accused Night Stalker Richard Ramirez. In addition, a veteran Los Angeles defense lawyer was appointed at county expense by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Tynan to assist the defense team in preparing for the trial.

Michael C. Carney, a one-time deputy district attorney, was appointed by Tynan to help privately retained defense attorneys Arturo Hernandez and Daniel Hernandez ready their final pretrial motions.

Tynan said Carney, a 15-year attorney, could help “in moving this case along toward its conclusion.”

Ramirez, 27, who is being held in the county jail without bail, is accused of 14 murders and 31 other felonies stemming from a grisly series of random 1985 attacks throughout Los Angeles County.

Carney, who would help prepare possible motions on such subjects as a possible change of venue, was recommended to Tynan by Hernandez and Hernandez, who are not related.

The defense lawyers also told Tynan that Sept. 30 could be considered a “firm” date for the trial to begin.
