Midfielder Jim Gabarra of Louisville beat goalkeeper Steve Habermann from the top of the box for the decisive goal, and the United States advanced to the second round of Olympic Games soccer qualifying Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Canada at Fenton, Mo.

Gabarra’s goal with 17:20 remaining in the second half enabled the U.S. to win the two-game series, 3-2, in total goals. Canada won the first game, 2-0, last week at St. John, New Brunswick.

The win moved the United States into a round-robin tournament of six teams consisting of Mexico and four other entrants to be determined.
