A San Diego City Council committee voted Wednesday to reserve $150,000 in social service funds from a defunct job-training program for the city’s first AIDS program.
“Now we can do more than we have done, which is nothing,” Councilman Ed Struiksma commented after the 3-0 vote to send the proposal to the full City Council on July 1.
Representatives of two support groups for AIDS victims asked that the council members consider funding their projects, but the Public Services and Safety Committee members requested a report from the city manager on how the funds could be spent most effectively.
Councilwoman Gloria McColl said that the committee action did not earmark the funds for any particular type of AIDS assistance. Education programs, medical aid and financial assistance for victims of the fatal communicable disease were discussed.
