The first arrest sweep of Los Angeles County bad check writers was launched by the district attorney’s office as five teams of investigators began serving warrants on 101 suspects in the eastern San Gabriel Valley. Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner announced the sweep at the West Covina Police Department and said that the suspects had been given the chance to comply voluntarily with the 8-month-old bad check enforcement program, but had failed to do so. “They will be brought into the Citrus Municipal Court and will be required to post on the average of $2,500 in bail pending their next court appearance,” Reiner said. He said other bad check writers have been persuaded to pay back a total of $68,360 to victims and to pay $23,000 for costs of the program.
