SAN FRANCISCO — A medical transcriber and part-time professional chicken impersonator won the “San Francisco: It’s the City Made Our Way” song contest.
Much to the chagrin of San Franciscans, who enjoy good-naturedly knocking their less glamorous neighbor across the bay, the winner, Konny Wellington, lives in Oakland.
The contest, sponsored by a coffee company, drew 10 contestants, a small crowd of curious tourists and the usual flocks of pigeons to Union Square over the weekend.
Wellington won a compact-disc player for her winning song, which included the lyrics:
It’s the way the city sparkles
It’s the way we celebrate
Union Square and Ghirardelli
The wharf and Golden Gate
It’s the way we love each other
You can’t beat this city, now!
Ain’t no doubt it’s a great city
San Francisco, U.S.A.
One of the judges, Blueprint Records President David Burgin, cringed as Wellington belted out her winning entry, and offered a curt “no” when asked if there was any potential recording talent to be found at the contest.
A San Francisco woman, Jane Cleveland, took second place with her song featuring several strained earthquake puns.
