Made in 1966, this updated adaptation of Zola’s “La Curee” begins with what seems a premonitory in-joke: Jane Fonda working out on an exercise mat, interrupted by stepson and eventual lover Peter McEnery. (He calls her exertions “buffoonery.”) The second, and probably the best, of Fonda’s four films with writer-director-husband Roger Vadim, it shows her in the bloom of what the French called her “B. B. Americaine” period: ravishingly sexy--and painfully sensitive--as a French business shark’s rich young Canadian bride, sinking obsessively into a fatal romance. Good as she is, the film’s mood suffers from the needless dubbing of Michel Piccoli and the generally mindless cropping, on the tape, of cameraman Claude Renoir’s glowing compositions.
