Federal investigators said failure of a bolt or other attachment hardware apparently caused a piece of metal to fall from the wing of an airliner into a Los Angeles residential neighborhood. The 20-foot section of a wing flap broke loose as an American Airlines DC-10 with 223 passengers and a crew of 11 on board was about to land Saturday at Los Angeles International Airport. No one on the ground was injured, and the airliner landed safely.
