East Berlin rock fans clashed with police early Tuesday morning at the conclusion of a Genesis concert held nearby in West Berlin. Chanting “The wall must go,” the 4,000-strong crowd hurled rocks, bottles and firecrackers at a police force of 1,000, who arrested 50. It was the most violent clash in three days of confrontations at the wall near the historic Brandenburg Gate, where East Germans had gathered to hear a series of rock concerts in West Berlin. David Bowie and U2 performed previous evenings outside the Reichstag building in West Berlin about 200 yards from the wall. In the first official reaction to the three days of youth unrest, East German authorities denied there had been any clashes between youths and police and cited alleged Western attempts to provoke trouble.
