Sportscope : West Has the Speed and East the Size in Valley All-Star Prep Football Game

Many of the top seniors in the San Gabriel Valley have been selected to play in the eighth National Football Foundation Hall of Fame Prep All-Star Football Game on Aug. 7 at Arroyo High in El Monte.

Jim Brownfield, game director and former Muir High coach, expects the game to pit the West’s speed against the East’s size.

The West has running backs Ricky Ervins of Muir and W.C. Morrison and Anthony Wallace of Pasadena, linebackers Tony Crutchfield of Muir and Anthony Porter of Duarte and defensive backs Marcus Robertson of Muir and Steve Provenzano of Arcadia.

Ervins, headed for USC, may be the top offensive threat for the West. The All-CIF Coastal Conference player rushed for 1,498 yards and 20 touchdowns and caught 43 passes for 546 yards and 8 touchdowns to lead Muir to its second straight conference title last season.

Two other offensive standouts for the West should be Wallace and quarterback Vince Phillips of Muir. Wallace rushed for 1,733 yards and 21 touchdowns in 180 carries as a senior and Phillips completed 150 of 228 passes for 1,847 yards and 17 touchdowns.

The East will counter with outstanding size headed by 6-7, 225-pound offensive tackle Troy Auzenne of Bishop Amat and offensive guard Dan Ruiz (6-2, 250) of Damien. Two other big linemen are Bishop Amat’s Ken Szalonek (6-0, 255) and Montclair’s Jose Perry (6-3, 250).

The East offense should be led by running backs David Crosby of Los Altos and Terrell Thompson of Ganesha. Crosby rushed for 1,305 yards and 20 touchdowns in 193 carries last season and Thompson ran for 1,138 yards and 13 touchdowns in 127 carries.

One of the defensive leaders for the East figures to be back Dana Hall of Ganesha, a speedster who led the valley with eight interceptions last season. Hall won the CIF state title in the 110-meter high hurdles last week.

Coaches have been announced for the first San Gabriel Valley Senior High Basketball Classic boys and girls all-star games June 28 at Citrus College in Glendora.

The game, which matches many of the top seniors in the San Gabriel Valley, has an East-vs.-West format. In the boys game, the West will be coached by John Gillette of El Monte and the East by Bill Murray of Diamond Bar. In the girls game, the West will be coached by Dudley Stewart of Pasadena and the East by Dave Confair of St. Lucy’s.

The girls’ coaches led their teams to outstanding seasons last year. Stewart’s Pasadena won its first Pacific League title and Confair guided St. Lucy’s to second place in the Baseline League and a surprising first-round 4-A Division playoff win over powerful Muir.

Murray’s team may have been the best among the boys in the valley last season, reaching the 4-A semifinals after winning the Sierra League title. Gillette coached El Monte to the 2-A title game in 1985.

Four 12-player teams will be announced Sunday. Game director Alec Esparza, girls’ coach at Monrovia, said coaches may nominate players through Friday by calling him at 359-5381. Proceeds will benefit Monrovia Unified School District athletic programs.

Diamond Bar High baseball star Craig Turley, who led his team to the CIF 4-A playoffs and was named Sierra League most valuable player, has signed to attend Cal State Dominguez Hills next season.

Turley, a 5-11 and 175-pound infielder, hit .429 and had 23 runs batted in, 2 home runs, 5 doubles and 6 triples.

He is also an outstanding soccer player, establishing CIF Southern Section records of 192 goals in his prep career and 67 goals last season. He was CIF 3-A player of the year and Sierra League most valuable player as a senior.

Turley is expected to concentrate on baseball for a strong Dominguez Hills team, which won the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. title and reached the NCAA Division II World Series this season.

Two players from Cal Poly Pomona who were selected in the major league baseball free agent draft last week have signed pro contracts.

Senior pitcher Charlie Webb has signed with the Seattle Mariners and senior first baseman Tom Weeks signed with the New York Yankees.

Webb, who was assigned to Bellingham, Wash., of the Class A Northwest League, set a Division II record as a senior with 15 consecutive complete games. He finished with a 12-6 record and 2.64 earned-run average and earned second-team Division II All-American honors.

Weeks, who will play for Oneonta, N.Y., of the Class A New York-Penn League, was Pomona’s most productive hitter with 11 home runs, 58 runs batted in and a .320 batting average. Weeks was named to the second team of the All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. and third team All-NCAA Division II Far West.

Cliff Hamlow, men’s basketball coach at Azusa Pacific University for 31 years and its athletic director, has been named to the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics National Executive Committee for next season.
